New High-Power Amplifier Expands Applications for LightGAIN DWDM Systems

Optelian is pleased to announce a new high-power amplifier for the LightGAIN DWDM system. The new OFA-310 +20 dBm amplifier is an addition to the existing set of OFA-210 and OFA-230 +17 dBm amplifier cards. Higher output power means that affordable, reliable LightGAIN DWDM systems can be used in a wider range of applications. Specifically, they can be used on longer links and for higher channel count applications. For example, an 80 channel DWDM system with an OFA-310 can reach as far as a 40-channel system with an OFA-210 amplifier.

Optelian amplifiers are notable for power consumption that is substantially lower than competitive offerings. The OFA-310 consumes only 11 watts, the OFA-210 only 9.5. They also feature low noise and small size, taking only one slot in a 5U-high shelf.

“This new high-power amplifier gives us more options when engineering networks,” said David Melanson, Optelian System Engineer. “It makes it easier to solve fiber capacity problems on longer links or for higher channel applications and metro OADM. In some situations it lets us avoid putting in a regeneration site, greatly reducing cost.”
